Your career at
J D Wetherspoon

We’re committed to training and developing our staff. Here’s a summary of what you can expect within each role.

Associates

About the role

At Wetherspoon, we call our staff ‘associates’. Our associates progress through our award-winning training programme; whether you want to work in the kitchen, as a cleaner, behind the bar, front of house on the floor or in one of our hotels, you can expect the same great development opportunities to help you to succeed.

You don’t need to have any previous experience, as you’ll be trained on every part of the role. You just need to be friendly, sociable and have a positive attitude to succeed. Regardless of whether you want to work full time or part time, you will receive the same outstanding training through on-the-job and online training.

Your training and development…

On day one, you’ll attend an induction which welcomes you to Wetherspoon and gives you the information which you will need to start working with us. Your training commences the moment you start, with a tour and pub-specific training – you’ll also get to meet other team members. This will be followed by online learning to build your knowledge further.

The next step is on-the-job training relevant to the area in which you will work, and someone will be on hand to work alongside you, showing you all you need to know.

Once you have mastered the basics and become a fully fledged associate, you will have the opportunity to become an expert in a focus area, such as coffee, ale, energy or cellar. You will also receive regular reviews and updates on your progress and this will form part of your training sign-off as an associate.
